I'm sure I'll go back sometime. It ties in perfectly with a wander round the Pine Forest (Horj Beirut). I was there for the sterling people watching and didn’t bet. I’m sure I’ll go back sometime. The lack of women there is interesting. Their admission is free but clearly they are not wanted there. I'm guessing that there were no groups of women there betting? Did you bet? How'd you do? Are you going back? Jason Georgia,

I recall seeing scenes of street cafe society on the TV news a couple of years ago and thinking how interesting it looked. The mix of religions is what makes Lebanon a country of contrasts in so many ways, from the architecture to the social mores. As for the experience, I can only compare it with racetracks in the north of England - - where perhaps you can picture grimy men with furtive glances drawing on thin home-rolled cigarettes while looking anxiously at their betting slips.
