Returning to a home that isn’t quite home any more prompts some kind of reverse culture shock in all of us, and no doubt the Lebanese feel it even more strongly than we lukewarm Brits.
Thank you for commenting, it is an honour to have thoughtful regular readers, and does me good to know you are out there!

For that, I would like to say thank you.

After reading “but others had become settled abroad and for them Lebanon became the land of the olden days, land of their rose-tinted childhood”, I couldn’t help but smile.

I have been living in the US a little over 30 years now. In those 30-odd years, I have made only a handful of short trips to Lebanon. Lately, I have been contemplating the idea of moving back: teaching, starting a business, etc… my way of giving something back.

“their attachment to it is unbelievably, irrationally and touchingly deep.” I don’t think anybody has ever put it in such a way before. You are right. It is unbelievable and irrational.

I often wonder if I can live in Lebanon and preserve my sanity. Your posts, along with a few other non-lebanese bloggers’, paint a excellent picture of what it’s like for a westerner to live in Lebanon: the wonderful, the good, the bad, and the ugly. So I’ll keep reading and learning, trying to determine if my relocation is a good idea.

Thanks again for the wonderful posts… and congratulations.

And congratulations :)
